I often get asked to teach Italian, and having done it before, I get a lot of enjoyment from doing it. Knowing another language is a gift. It opens up a world beyond your wildest imagination. I’m very thankful in that I was exposed to the Italian language at an early age. So I’m now offering Italian lessons as a way of giving back to those who want to learn, and to a great organization (see below).

I’ve put together a “Beginning Italian for Travelers” program – primarily a conversation-based approach to learning the language, starting from scratch…right from the beginner level. If you are planning a trip to Italy, or just want to learn some Italian, this will be the perfect course for you! It is an intensive 4-week course, with each class consisting of 1.5 hours of class time with presentations, examples, dialogue, exercises, etc.

Check out the course agenda (subject to change based on instructor discretion)

Optional – After each class, whoever would like to join us for lunch at a local restaurant, we can continue our Italian conversation.

When: Saturdays Sept 29, Oct 6, Oct 20 and Oct 27. From: 10:30 to Noon, Optional lunch – afterwards at ABC Pizza on 7512 W Hillsborough Ave. Note, There will be no class on Oct 13. Instead the center is holding a Parranda and everyone is welcome to attend.

Where: Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) at the Multicultural Center 6704 Hanley Road, Tampa, Florida, 33634

Books: You will need to purchase the following item Italian Made Simple: Revised and Updated by Chritina Mazzoni. You can order from the previous link on Amazon, or perhaps you can find one in your local Borders store. I also highly recommend bringing a notebook to class.

Cost: The cost for the 4-week course (6 hours) will be $60, which will all go to benefit FICS. Lunch is not included in this cost.

Who is FICS, and what do they do?

I’m honored to be on the board of directors for this great organization. I’ve been on the board for about 3 years, and am always looking to help them out whenever I can. Below is only an excerpt of the great things that they do for this community.

“FICS works at the community level to build on strenghts to create effective programs that keep youth out of gangs, help adults and youth become healthier, and live HIV and substance free. Our reach extends to 2,000 people per year, predominantly low-income minority youth and adults, translating to documented outcomes of only one teen pregnancy in four years compared to the 40 that were documented before the program began; zero cases of HIV and a substance abuse rate for youth of only 3% compared to national norms of 15%. Forty-four adult diabetics in our programs lost weight, for an average of 9.8 lbs. in one year, and 86% were compliant with diabetic testing. We estimate a conservative savings to our community of $4.89 for every dollar spent on after school programs, meaning we have saved the community $1.5 million for youth. In terms of diabetics’ outcomes, we have documented a cost-savings of $2.2 million in only one year.”

If you are interested in learning Italian, then sign up now, I don't offer this very often. If you were in my last class, I will have some new material.

Class size will be limited to 8 - 10 people – I found that this will promote the most effective learning. Therefore it is important to register right away!

If there is interest afterwards, I will build upon what we’ve learned in the 4-week class, and continue the classes.

Signup using the button below or this link. I will receive the funds through my site, and then pay F.I.C.S. Your deduction may be tax-deductible. You will receive your receipt (from F.I.C.S.) for tax purposes during the class.

Hi Robert,

In Italian you would say "La mia valigia". If the object you are describing is feminine, you say "la mia". If it is masculine, you would say "il mio". As in il mio portofoglio.

Yes, if you are interested in a tutor, just use the contact form on this site.

I also have a meetup group in Tampa and we meet every so often. We have an Italian mass coming up this weekend if you are interested.

Hello,

I have been doing Rosetta Stone and three other online courses now for 5 months. I have sort of a grasp on it, but I have never communicated with a single person in Italian, and I'm quite nervous - as I am trying I do have questions sometimes as to what exactly I just said, and did I said it right.

ie:

Do I (as a male) always say "Il mio" or do I say "La Mia" if I was talking about my suitcase? (La mia valigia) or (Il mio valigia)

Anyway - I am in Tampa Dec and Jan and looking for some tutoring and help learning Italian. Possible?
