February 3 through 5 (annually)

Saint Agatha, a martyr who died in 252 at age 15, is the patron saint of Catania, Sicily

Approximately 1 million people (locals and tourists) will pay homage to Catania’s patron Saint. The 2-day procession is said to be the second largest religious procession in the world.  There will be fireworks display, a silver-cart procession throughout the city honoring Sant’ Agata, and other Sicilian traditions, folklore, religious ceremonies that go back approximately 500 years. Most of the events will take place by Piazza Duomo.

Pictured below is the Cathedral in Catania (started in 1091 AD), the symbol of the city, with the chapel of Sant' Agata looking out on the Piazza Duomo.
