Pisa - San Ranieri Festivals
When: 16 Jun - 17 Jun Each June Pisa honors its patron saint - San Ranieri.
Where: Pisa, Tuscan region of Italy, along the Arno River (approx 1 hour from Florence)
The festival dates back to 1688 to commemorate the moving of the ashes of the Saint. This was the first time the city was bathed in lights.
June 16 – Luminaria di San Ranieri - thousands of candles light the bridges and historic buildings of Pisa. The illuminations are enhanced by a parade of antique boats with costumed crews. The leaning Tower is illuminated too, by oil lamps, set also in the crenellations of the city walls of Piazza dei Miracoli.
June 17 – Regata di San Ranieri - Four teams of boats, which represent the four ancient town districts, will compete in a 1500 meter race along the Arno. When a boat anchors at the finish line, a climber must climb to the top of a 10 meter mast to take the victory flag. The winning team will receive Kudos (compliments) of San Raneiri and a plump farm animal.
