The Carnevale di Sciacca is one of Italy's most famous.  It usually happens before Lent, but this year it was rescheduled.

There are parades of enormous papier mache' figures carried on floats, colorful costumes, etc  that represent characters that evoke ancient local traditions.  The Sciacca Carnival is an example of Sicily's rich cultural heritage and traditions.

The festival also has sport competitions and folklore exhibitions.

Originally developed as a defiance of the aristochratic rule and opposition to the rules establilshed by the Church.  Carnevale, which means "no meat", was one last hurrah before Lent, usually on Fat Tuesday.
