The Historic Venice Regatta

Where: The Grand Canal (see route details below)

When: first Sunday in September each year, dates back to 1315.
Weekend festivities:  Saturday, September 4th, and Sunday, September 5th, 2010

The race features fast boats with two oars (gondolini), and a procession of historical boats containing people in costume which also goes through the city.  The Grand Canal is filled with beautifully crafted 13th-century boats.  The banks of the canals are llined with thousands of spectators.

The route:

Starts at Riva degli Schiavoni then through the Grand Canal.  Then arriving to the St. Lucia Station then the boats come back to Ca' Foscari.  This is where the winner is announced.

Get there early if you want a good view, because this race draws many passionate fans.

This event is free.
