It's funny how far we've come in society. Many people by today's standards would be shocked to know that George Eliot, the author of many famous works and quotes was actually a woman.   Marian Evans created the pen name in 1857 to help disguise the fact that she was a female novelist.  She also felt that her status as being unmarried would also have been detrimental to her career.  So she came up with the pseudonym of George Eliot after convincing her publisher.
