When one thinks of great cities of the world to visit many people will immediately think of places like New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, etc. Of course Rome and Rio de Janeiro are other places that come into many people's minds. All those other places are unique and special in their own right, but there is something about Rome that makes it extra special. It has that extra "oomph" about it that makes it a worthwhile visit when one makes a trip to Italy.

If you are looking for a peaceful and quiet vacation, places like Tuscany, Umbria, Sardinia and Calabria come to mind. But what is it about Rome that makes it a unique and special city? This place should be on everyone's proverbial "bucket list" and here are some reasons why...

First of all, the climate in Rome is very mild compared to other great cites - a lot more hospitable than New York, London or Paris. You can dine "al fresco" most of the year and enjoy walking through the city enjoying city-life in the many magnificent town squares or "piazzas."

Italians Say - A Piedi - By Foot

I also like the fact that it is very walkable city but yet has an excellent transportation system. The city has a great metro (tube) system with two lines that cross each other at Termini Station and has stops at most of the major attractions (i.e. St. Peter's Cathedral & the Vatican, Spanish Steps & Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum & the Forum, etc.).

Walking through the city is the best way to get around and enjoy the city's sights. As you walk through the city you are bound to stumble upon many pleasant surprises. There are restaurants, pizza places, gelato (ice cream) shops, bakeries, cafes, etc. where you can savor and smell some of the best that Rome has to offer!

Rome is in essence an outdoor museum with great works of art in front of you and around the next corner as well. And the people of Rome (citizens and tourists) know that they are also part of the show. It's a great place to people-watch and see all the best of Italian fashion.

It is a showcase and a place where you can see the past interwoven into modern society. You can't help but marvel about the constant reminders to the ancient world with ruins, statues, etc. being constantly in your sights. And then you'll also be reminded about the modern world with the automobiles, cell phone stores, high-fashion shops, etc. It's this constant blending and juxtaposition of ancient to modern back to ancient that gives Rome a unique charm.

Whether you are planning your first trip or vacation to Rome or if this is one of the many city breaks to Rome that you've taken, just know that the city is bound to endear your heart and will leave you wanting more. After all, it is called the "Eternal City" for a reason.
