In Italy you will see tons of scooters (Italian language lesson - motorini or vespe) or mopeds as a dominant form of transportation for many of the locals.  And with good reason: current gas prices in Italy are right around $8.00 USD per gallon.  If you plan on living there, using a moped in makes a lot of sense.

Should I rent a moped while I'm in Italy?

Mopeds are not for the faint of heart in Italia.  If you've never ridden one in a big city, Italy is certainly not the place to start your driving education.  Many moped drivers will weave in and out of traffic.  This is not a good place to be a copy-cat unless you have done it before.

In fact, it'll probably be tough to find a place in one of the bigger cities that will rent one to you.

However, if you are in a small resort-type beach town, or a quiet rural area, renting a moped can be a lot of fun.

Here are the requirements to rent a moped

  • you must be over 21 and
  • you must hold a full driver's license
  • you will have to leave your passport and credit card for deposit
  • helmets (casca) must be worn at all times

Check with your health insurance company prior to your trip regarding coverage while you are on vacation.  In the unfortunate circumstance that you should get into an accident, dial 118 for emergency help.
